Webtoon and New Illustration

Inner Child Portrait

The illustration is based on the concept of ”hugging the inner child”. It projects the idea of a woman reaching out to her inner child while holding onto a baby. Both the baby and the little girl are in need of protection from the shadows which can symbolise society.

Awakening the inner child and enjoying the moments in life. It is time to live my life with purpose and find ways through these turbulence.

This is the beginning of a series that will occur soon. Volume one…

Artmas Day 1: Pipeline test

In the previous week, I decided to do more studies with ink and gouache. There will be another video coming soon about my journey into understanding gouache to make concepts. This was a quite an interesting process as I didn’t know what I was doing but at the same time was excited to explore. I was quite patience and didn’t worry about details but rather the values and the colors in their simplest form. I learned that I do enjoy planning my greyscale digitally rather traditionally. I also find doing environments more fun then creating portraits of people which in my head is quite difficult.

Concept Collaboration

One thing that I have learned in my art journey is that no matter what level of experience you are at, you are always learning. What is up sassytaco it’s your rainbow graysbygrace and I hope you are doing well on this wonderful Monday as well as practicing good hygiene by washing your hands as well as wearing a mask in public areas. Today, I’ve decided to come and speak about a collaboration I’ve decided to test out with zelda.hn on instagram.

\

Firstly, I suggested we give each other concepts that we wold want to see from each other. The concept that I got is based on Hanahaki disease which is a fictional Japanese disease whereby a lover who is not loved by the other lover vomits petals and flowers and eventually the lungs grow into a plant. She suggested that she didn’t want the flower part but find other ideas such as emojis, stars and whatever I can come up. As soon as I read emojis my wild artsy child came out of me and I knew for sure I needed to use them. I kept it simple , worked on mood, lighting and tested out my skills on dynamic poses. Furthermore, we did agree on the fact that we both learned something new such as for me I learned to approach hair and hands confidently as well as lighting. I also learned to love my hard brush and balance it with my water color soft brush. Lastly, I thought of wanting to be diverse in my art style being the it is in illustration, making cards, animation …diversity shall be achieved.

What/Who inspires your current work?

Hanifa is a Congolese fashion brand that has inspired my current work since I have always wanted to create an online animated fashion show. I have decided to use four outfits so that I am able to concentrate on them and don’t overwhelm myself. I am giving myself two weeks on this and aim for at least 1 minute since I was advised to aim for that time. I used the the struggles from my previous project to fix the current and let me say they come and go. However, this time I am ready for them and shall overcome them.

What is this projects struggles?

The reference videos are not quite clear and I need to find ways to use them. I am sure that obtaining images from Pinterest and using them as reference photos can make the process much more efficient and this is only cause I have a horrible camera.

The other struggle is the time frame I aim for is quite inconvenient. Now, we may be in quarantine but staying at home involves doing home chores, and even seeing ”art” being done may result in home chores( my experience only). Resulting in ending up making animations around 11 pm but I got to find a solution.

However, everything is going so well and I am excited for this project to finish as well as hoping the results turn out as how I planned it to be. If you are an artist what are you working on and who inspires your current project or what?

Loomis Method

what is up sassytaco welcome back to another blog post and today I decided to give an update about a method I have been using to create some of my unique characters such as the below:

I have been using the Loomis method which is quite efficient to draw heads, eyebrows, hair, and eyes. It has also helped me learn how to draw the 3/4 profile because I STRUGGLED! and now I draw almost all my characters in 3/4 and forget to draw in front view *sad face* One important thing that I found other artist doing was using reference images while applying the Loomis method and learning where each feature are because this is the starter of learning the foundation. Another tip that has been given by other artist is to not look for your art style but rather understand the foundation. I am not really a person of art style because how I draw traditionally and digitally differs in various ideas.

However, I am still struggling a bit because some things do get out of proportion but that is normal because if you are starting out, mistakes are to occur. Honestly the best advice I can give a beginner artist is to be patience with yourself and learn what you need, to be become the artist you want to become because if you rush into using a specific medium than you might just crush. It is similar to when you go to university and gain a degree(First you learn the theory, than you continue with practical…I just see it like that). Some people will be able to catch up quickly others will uniquely catch up so, don’t stress yourself if you can’t draw like Leonardo de Vinci as I said in my previous post it takes a lot of years of practicing and making mistakes. Furthermore, You can’t compare yourself with somebody that has been doing art for 25 years. If you are interested, I know you are that is why you have reached to this point.. I have collected some tutorials that may help you in starting out to draw a human face.

All these resources, are sassy-taco verified:

Don’t try to get better at Art

We reacting to another video that I am absolutely excited to talk about! This is Borodante’s video on Don’t try to get better at Art and I can relate. What is up sassy tacos, it is your rainbow graysbygrace and Happy Monday. One way I could summarize the video is, I have had many people come to me saying I want to be a better artist but I suck at Art. Okay, but what do you suck at? composition, shape language, telling a story, autonomy, coloring, lighting…???? What? There are so many tutorials out there that teach you what you need to work on made by professional artists. I may also add that it is quite interesting seeing artists have different opinions and you may learn what works for you.

Furthermore, When I began to illustrate one aspect that I wanted to work on is proportion and understand the structure of a female and male face. So, I drew people after people but never considered that I am looking at a 3D object and that is why I always asked myself what is wrong? Why is this not coming to life? Well, proportion, light, and shadow …Autonomy! In present, I researched and practiced with consciousness day after day. Learning the basics before producing my artwork and yet there is still room for improvements.

I would like to know do you enjoying looking at art and who are your favorite artist?

Today’s Artist

While watching YouTube videos I bumped into Ergo Josh’s Video on ”It’s harder to be an artist today’‘ and I felt I need to give my feedback as an artist. Before I start, I want you to take a moment to watch it and when your done you can read my story: I have been drawing for more than three years and only started to get serious in grade 11 because I wanted to learn how to draw portraits and understand proportions( Did it the wrong way but I still learned a lot). I drew illustrations using makeup and color pencils because during that period of time I could not buy paint or afford it however this taught to experiment and enjoy the process of making illustrations. Then, I learned about ”Tumblr outline” which drew me into Digital Painting( turning my sketch or somebody’s picture into a digital painting) and during this period I used adobe draw when suddenly my phone malfunctioned. After days of research and downloading I settled with Medibang paint pro on the laptop. From there I explored 2d Animation and found that I can turn my images into moving pictures. So, I decided to explore in Blender( 3D SOFTWARE) following Blender Guru’s tutorials which helped me understand when I modeling I should think of the object as a 3D basic Shape resulting in being able to create environments. When I got comfortable, I was like… wait-a -minute I can go back into creating Short films so… Here I am. IN ANIMATION!

Adding on, I tell my story because I feel the process is important to me than the final image because it is an experimental stage where I try to figure out how to solve a problem. For example in my current project, I am working on ”lighting” using a method called coloring in greyscale which helps me figure out values (how light or dark something is). While I am doing this, I am searching on youtube and seeing how other artists have dealt with this and they speak about how to use shapes as shadows… the direction of the brush… Large brush…and balance between soft and hard brush…concentrate on the edge and where to place the soft brush..use reference that may help you. This may sound easy as you watch it but if you don’t try I promise you, you will struggle( my case right now).

Furthermore, I feel Ergo Josh is right when he says we do want to reach that potential of somebody else even though this person has taken years of practice and this urge to be somebody else eliminates the reason why we create. Most of the top artists when they started out didn’t have the resources but we have the resources in today’s world but we don’t utilize it efficiently. There is another video where he explains that sometimes you need to really have a break from the internet and just start drawing without posting due to the fact you will find that fire. I feel having an attitude such as ”I want to be like another artist even though I have limited skills” has happened to me during my animation journey because I wanted to CREATE! CREATE! CREATE! not considering I got to learn the fundamentals and be patience. As a result, after watching his video it has inspired me to grow as an artist and create more content on my blog to share resources that I find in this Journey. There will be more post coming and you may also request if you want.

what are some tips you can give other fellow artist …comment down below ..lets chat!
